Emil Filén: The Pioneer, 1947. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum The Pioneer Artist Emil Filén Haagan sankaripuisto, Haaga, Helsinki The sculpture, located in the Haaga veterans’ cemetery, is one of the many patriotic memorials erected following the Winter and Continuation Wars. These works are typically very naturalistic and extremely realistic. “The Pioneer” depicts the Classical heroic theme of a wounded or dying soldier. It has strong heroic and patriotic pathos. The sculpture was unveiled in 1947 and was paid for by the Haaga municipal council. It is cast in bronze. The work doesn’t belong to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed by HAM.
