Sibelius portrait Artist Wäinö Aaltonen , Helsinki The sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen made several portaits of Sibelius during the same period. Originally, the State commissioned a marble portrait of the composer to celebrate his 70 year birthday, from which the artist made a bronze copy. Sibelius sat as a model for Wäinö Aaltosen in his studio in 1935. Later on, Wäinö Aaltonen made a metre-high variation of the portrait, of which a bronze cast was placed in ownership of the Art Academy of Rio de Janeiro in 1965. Aaltonen later became an academic member of the Academy. Together with Wäinö Aaltonen’s heirs, Gyllenberg’s Art Museum cast a new bronze of the work in 1999. The work doesn’t belong to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed by HAM. Read more.. At map
