Pro Teekkari / Pro Tech. Student

Artist Pekka Ojonen

Hietalahdentori, Teknillisen opiston edusta, Kamppi, Helsinki

The concrete-cast wheel designed by the architect Pekka Ojonen (1932-2016) is a reminder that the Helsinki University of Technology was located in Helsinki prior to being transferred to Otaniemi in Espoo. The pedestal contains the text: “Helsingin kaupungille teekkareilta muuttopäivänä 30.9.1966.” (To the City of Helsinki from the tech. students on September 30, 1966, the day when the school left Helsinki). In the ‘Pro Tech. Student’, concrete is used in a way popular in Pop Art, that is, by giving the everyday material a serious and ironic meaning. But is the wheel art or not?

The work doesn’t belong to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed by HAM.
