Matti Haupt: Against the Raging Sea. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum Päin merta myrskyävää / Against the Raging Sea Artist Matti Haupt Eteläranta 8, Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki After finishing the drawing school of the Fine Arts Association of Finland Matti Haupt studied in the 1930s under Wäinö Aaltonen and later under Marino Marini in Italy. Against the Raging Sea is a relief depicting a mermaid on a horse challenging a raging storm. She is holding a horn as a symbol of the beginning struggle. The building originally housed the head offices of Suomen Höyrylaiva Oy, and the work symbolizes the struggle between the merchant marine and the sea. The piece is deliberate in its classicist expression and symbolism. It is approximately 2.5 metres wide and 3 metres high.
