Merestä noussut / Risen from the sea

Artist Kauko Räsänen

, Helsinki

‘Risen from the sea’ is a 1.5 metre high piece depicting a young woman stretching her limbs in a sitting position. Although Kauko Räsänen (1926-2015) made a plaster model of the sculpture already in 1953, it was not cast in bronze until 1974. It was bought by the City of Helsinki and erected in Pasila in 1975. The work is also known as `The Bathing maiden’. Despite being figurative, `Risen from the sea’ is not realistic. It contains both harmonious Classical features and discord created by its dynamic aspects. Although the position of the figure is tensed, the placement of volumes is open and unrestrained.

The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
