Eero Eerikäinen and Oskari Jauhiainen: Memorial for Seafarers, 1968. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum / Maija Toivanen Merenkulun muistomerkki/ Memorial for Seafarers Artist Eero Eerikäinen, Oskari Jauhiainen Ursininkallio, Merisatamanranta, Eira, Helsinki Sculptor Oskari Jauhiainen and Architecht Eero Eerikäinen designed this concrete memorial in 1968 to commemorate Finnish seafarers. A perpetual flame burns on top of the monument. The memorial also includes a bronze compass with the inscription “Suomen merenkulkijoille Finlands sjöfarare MCMMLXVIII” – In Memory of Finnish Seafarers, 1968. In 1984, the Finnish Seamen’s Mission revealed a copper plaque, designed by Oskari Jauhiainen, commemorating sailors who drowned when M/S Malmi sank on the Baltic Sea on 17 December 1979.
