Artist Ipi Kärki

Kampin metroasema, Helsinki

Ipi Kärki’s (B. 1951) colourful painting Earth, Air, Fire and Water above the escalator at the Kamppi metro station was the first public artwork on the Helsinki metro line. The work was purchased by the arts division of the Helsinki City Art Museum with funds from the commission responsible for the construction of the metro. The sculpture outside the station is the result of an invitational competition organised by the Arts Division of the Cultural Committee of Helsinki.
The painting at the Kamppi station is composed of five panels with a total size of 300x750cm. The work is painted in oil on blockboard. It belongs to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed and curated by HAM.
