Itsenäisyyden kuusen muistokivi/ Monument under the Spruce of Independence

Consul General Rodolf Ray donated the spruce of independence to the Finnish Parliament in 1917 and a memorial stone later in 1931. The stone is a ornamental black granite slab with a text both on the front and the back. The text on the back says “Itsenäisyyden kuuselle: Huokukoon tämä kuusi halki myrskyjen, pilvisäiden, kautta aurinkoisten tyvenien, kautta kutsuvien kuutamoiden, kautta tummuvien öiden, kanssa luonnon suuren kuoron, luonnon suuressa salissa, kanssa laulavien lasten, parissa partasuiden virttä: Oi Herra, siunaa Suomen kansa.” (To the spruce of independence: May this spruce blazon through storm, cloudy weather, sun and inviting moonlight, though darkening night with nature’s vast choir in its great hall, with singing children and greying men the hymn `Bless the people of Finland, o Lord’.)
