Viktor Jansson: Aallottaria/ Water Nymphs, 1940. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum / Hanna Kukorelli Aallottaria/ Water Nymphs Artist Viktor Jansson Kappeliesplanadi, Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki Water Nymphs is one of five fountains Viktor Jansson created between 1940-44. ‘Water Nymphs’, also known as ‘Play’, was commissioned by the City of Helsinki to enhance the small water pool near the Kappeli restaurant situated in Esplanadi park in 1942. In an articulate and elegant Classicist style, the work depicts two water nymphs, or mermaids, playing on the waves with a fish. Viktor Jansson’s (1886-1958) daughter Tove, the renowned author of the ‘Moomin’ books, modelled for the larger nymph. ‘Water Nymphs’ is made of bronze and is 115 cm in height.
