Oliver Whitehead: Play, 2003. Photo: HAM/Hanna Kukorelli. Play Artist Oliver Whitehead Playground Unikko, Unikkotie 8, 00720 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Limited access: the work is available to view for the users of the premises only. Oliver Whitehead (b. 1947, Eccles, Lancashire, Great Britain) created this series of five paintings hung in the shelter at playground Unikko. The works are oil paintings stretched on round frames, and at first glance they seem quite abstract, yet one can find a figurative motif in them: toys. The objects are framed so as to be virtually unrecognisable, showing just a small portion without revealing the scale. The outlines of the toys are blurred, as if the beholder’s eyes or the camera were out of focus. The artist invites the viewer into a game of recognition, to discover and identify the motifs from the hints he provides. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
