Kristiina Uusitalo: Borne by Light, 2013. Photo: HAM/Hanna Kukorelli. Borne by Light Artist Kristiina Uusitalo Helsinki City Hospital Malmi, Talvelantie 6, 00700 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Limited access: the work is available to view for the users of the premises only. The theme of this painting by Kristiina Uusitalo (b. 1959, Sulkava) is life force. Nearly ten metres tall, the painting was made directly on the wall of the hospital lobby next to the elevator. Uusitalo says: “My starting point was forsythia, or Easter tree, which flowers in the spring, and how it then turns green. The yellow colour is an intangible yet cohesive element, which also creates an energetic and warming complementary colour space for cooler and more neutral surfaces. The illusion of movement is strengthened by the shapes that reflect light and the surroundings, and they also establish a link between the image and the surrounding space.” The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
