Indoor Sculpture

Limited access: the work is available to view for the users of the premises only.

These four textile tapestries by Inka Kivalo (b. 1956) are mounted in the relatives’ room, lounge areas and dining room of the Riistavuori Senior Service Centre. The two large figures in the tapestry entitled Summer can be seen as hearts or tulips. Spring depicts a landscape, while The World Is Full of Things and Early Summer both feature yellow and red flowers. The works are intended to bring colours, a sense of calm, and a warm ambience to the centre.

Kivalo has incorporated an element of spontaneous painterliness into the technique of weaving and the age-old tradition of tapestry. She describes her practice as painting with thread. Colour is a central element in the works, and Kivalo emphasises beauty and sensuality. The slow process of weaving requires patience, yet the artist says it can also be playful and joyful.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
