Approx. 6 Billion Kilometres

Artist Vesa-Pekka Rannikko

Mellunmäki Primary School, Rukatunturintie 14, 00970 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

Limited access: the work is available to view for the users of the premises only.

Approx. 6 Billion Kilometres by Vesa-Pekka Rannikko (s. 1968, Turku) consists of eight spheres of different sizes and colours and a ring. All objects are made of fibreglass-laminated urethane foam finished with a mix of resin and pigment. The work is installed in a space between the old and the new school buildings.

The work’s starting point is the planets, and the title alludes to the distance between them. In Rannikko’s piece, however, the planets are bunched together into a tight group.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
