The Encounter

Artist Pekka Jylhä

Kallvikinniementie 1, Helsinki

The Encounter by Pekka Jylhä (b. 1955, Toholampi) is located in the yard outside the entrance to the the former Kallahti Primary School, now Merilahti Primary School. Consisting of the basic geometric shapes of sphere, rectangle and cone, it also includes a pattern of flattened bronze beads embedded in the ground. Otherwise, the installation is made of tinted concrete.

While echoing the architecture of the school, the installation also appropriates a space for itself in the yard. The geometric objects reference school art classes, during which a basic exercise in perception and technique is to draw geometric forms from observation.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
