Art workshops for groups

Tove Jansson illustrated several ex libris, or bookplates, indicating ownership of a book. A bookplate often includes the book owner’s initials and an illustration reflecting things that are important to the owner. The bookplate is affixed to the top left corner of a book’s front endpaper. Jansson’s ex libris, illustrated in 1947, contains several motifs meaningful to her: the sea, a woman’s body, a Moomintroll, flowers, and a burning heart with the text “Labora et Amare” below it, a slightly misspelled version of the Latin slogan meaning “to work and love”.

In the workshop, we will make bookplates using the drypoint technique, which is an intaglio printmaking method. We will start by sketching subjects from the Paradise exhibition. The actual image is incised into a plastic plate with a metal needle and printed onto paper using a press.

The Girl Who Turned into a Rosebush reflects on the practices of expressing and seeing. On the guided tour, we will explore the City of Helsinki’s art collection through six themes. By closely observing the artworks, attention is drawn to details that usually seem irrelevant. The exhibition features old and new works from the collection, executed with various media. Through dialogue and juxtaposition, they provide opportunities for new interpretations.

For one of HAM’s great arched halls, Norwegian contemporary artist Tori Wrånes will create a world inspired by surrealism and imagination. Wrånes has long made use of various figures and creatures, which she depicts performing rituals in their own, dreamlike worlds. Together, exhibition’s namesake piece, BIG WATER (2022), a large six-channel video and sound installation and object-like artworks create a whole that encourages us to imagine further, to surrender to the new and to gather around things that unite us.
