Myllerrys / Turbulence

Artist Sari Nikola

, Helsinki

The five large white torsos erected in front of the Ensikoti home for unmarried mothers in the winter of 2002 are part of Sari Nikola’s series called Turbulence. The series is aptly named after the physical and mental turbulence and transformations that accompany womanhood and maternity. The pieces are made of white concrete. According to the artist, the material symbolises the sanctity and mystique of the subject, as well as its ordinariness and naturalness.

The titles of the studies are:
1. Virginity
2. Pregnancy
3. What Now
4. Exhaustion
5. Womanhood or New Balance

The works don’t belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
