Three Moments in the Life of Chewing Gum

Artist Olli Salo

Kenttäkuja 12, Helsinki

Three Moments in the Life of Chewing Gum by Olli Salo (b. 1967, Helsinki) consists of three stone sculptures and a bronze relief. The tallest stone piece (270 cm) is made of red granite from Mäntsälä. The shallow stone shaped like a dish (diameter about 160 cm) and the third stone are both made of red granite from Taivassalo. All stones are fashioned using the same technique: they were chiselled with a jackhammer, then fired and polished.

All three are modelled on pieces of gum chewed by three pupils of the school. From them the artist chose one vertical and one horizontal shape and an organic random form that were all then enlarged, hewn in stone and installed in the school yard. The original pieces of gum were cast in bronze in 1-to-1 scale and mounted on the wall next to the school entrance as a relief.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
