Päivän lapset / Children of The Day

Artist Sakari Tohka

, Helsinki

Sakari Tohka’s (1911-1958) bronze piece depicts three children reaching towards the sun. Placed in the courtyard of the U-shaped school building, the piece faces northwest. In the mornings, the children greet students arriving at school, their arms and faces basking in sunlight. As the day progresses, the sun circles the piece, casting a long shadow on the yard and the children, yet never leaving their raised faces. In a sense, the work is a sundial that measures the length of the school day and the changing light of the seasons.

The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
