Nonstop

Artist Timo Heino

Rastilan metroasema, Rastila, Helsinki

Timo Heino’s (b. 1962, Tampere) Nonstop at Rastila metro station in Eastern Helsinki is 3 metres high and 32 metres wide. It consists of 16 steel plates, each 2 metres across. Four of the plates are polished stainless steel, 4 are painted glossy black with a technique used to paint cars and the rest are treated in a way that allows them to corrode and acquire a darker and more varied texture. The work is mounted near the main entrance of the station on the southern wall of the southern rail.

According to Timo Heino, the title Nonstop refers both to the gradual corrosion of the surface and the endless stream of passengers in the station, who are reflected in the polished black and stainless plates. The underlying idea is continuous change: the juxtaposition of rusting and stainless steel is a comment on the fluid boundary between the transient and the permanent, between nature and culture.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed and curated by HAM.
