Ilmatar – the Goddess of Air

Artist Kari Juva

, Helsinki

Kari Juva is an internationally known and very productive artist. The critic Pessi Rautio has written that in Juva’s work stylized figures often approach abstract form as a result of an effect of the light or some amalgamation (1995). The piece depicts mythical Ilmatar, the maiden of air from Kalevala and the mother of Väinämöinen.

The work was commissioned from Juva by MTV, a television broadcasting company. It is bronze. The work doesn’t belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
