Memorial to Georg Malmstén

Artist Raimo Heino

Malmsténinkulma, Etu-Töölö, Helsinki

An extremely talented musician, Georg Malmstén (1902-1981) was known especially for his popular music. His evergreen melodies, children’s songs and film themes have remained fresh in peoples minds. Georg Malmstén’s memorial was erected on the artist’s 90th birthday. It consists of a red granite stone slab and a round bronze medal with Malmstén’s profile in bas-relief. The sculpture was unveiled in 1992. The artist, Raimo Heinonen, who is known especially as a maker of medals, has revised the traditional theme of the memorial medal into a free-standing piece of sculpture. The red granite and bronze give the work dignity without pomposity.

The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
