Flai-Flai

Artist Antti Nordin

Riihipellonkuja 2, Helsinki

Konala Primary School was the first school in Helsinki for which a work of art was acquired under the Percent for Art scheme of reserving one percent in a construction budget for art.

Flai-Flai by Antti Nordin (b. 1960, Pietarsaari) was made of large steel components painted blue and stacked on top of one another. The work seemed like a strictly constructivist composition, yet inside the work linear forms disintegrated into irregular and curving shapes, turning the geometric piece into an organic sculpture. The regularity of the work was also broken up by the impression that the leaning shape swayed. The conflict between the forms and the seemingly careless tilt produced a sense of tension in the work.

The work was removed during the renovation in 2019.
